People
are affected by the sins of our parents, grandparents and other
ancestors.
- A father who goes to a prostitute may bring AIDS to his wife
and his next child.
- An angry alcoholic father creates fear, insecurity and other
problems in his children. Many times the children will grow up
to act similar to their parents.
- A mother who visited fortunetellers and was then harassed by
evil spirits, may find her children affected as well and the spirit
may pass on to them when she dies.
- People receive their genes from their parents and character traits
are passed on. The Bible points to this in Hebrews 7:9-10.
God's word declares
that the effect of sins is passed on to the children.
- When they break God's commandments. Exodus 20:4-6
- The parents' sins combined with the children's choices
cause the problems. Jeremiah 16:10-12
- The effect continues even after the parents die. Lamentations
5:7
- But people are not lost because of their parents' sin. They
can repent and escape. Deuteronomy 24:16; Ezekiel 18:19-20
We can break much of the
effect of our parents' sins in our lives.
- Know clearly that Jesus took on a human body like ours in order
to help us be free from the sins that are passed on to us. Hebrews
2:14-18; Matthew 1:1-16
- Reflect on your parents' lives, comparing them with yours
to see what sins are there.
- Confess your sins and confess your parents' sins in particular.
Leviticus 26:39-45
I confess __________________________________________________________
Examples of those who did this are Daniel 9:3-19, in particular
verse 8. Ezra in Ezra 9:5-15. Nehemiah in Nehemiah 1:4-11; 9:1-3
Agree that their sins were wrong and that God is right in punishing.
- Ask for forgiveness, trusting in Jesus' blood for pardon
for participating in your parents' sins. 1 Peter 1:18
- Forgive your parents for what they passed on to you, recognizing
what they also received from their parents.
- Say, "I renounce any curses that have been placed on me
and I break all of their power on my life and the lives of my
descendants through the redemptive work of Christ on the Cross."
Galatians 3:13
- Then joyfully thank God for freedom from those sins.
- Continue this process as you come across struggles and sins
in your life.
