1. Focus your mind on
what is good. Think about what you want to become not the bad
that you think you are. Philippians 4:8-9; 2 Corinthians 3:18; Hebrews
12:1-2
Examples: Take time to read your Bible and
meditate on God's character and Jesus' life, every day
and especially the first thing in the morning. Stop during the day
to read a text or sing a song.
Pray every morning, "I place this day, my life,
my loved ones, my work in the Lord's hands. Whatever happens,
whatever results, if I am in the Lord's hands, it is the Lord's
will and it is good."
Take time for silence simply reflecting on the fact
that everything passes away except for God. He alone is always there
and always faithful.
2. Stop doing things that
make you focus on negative thoughts.
Examples: Gossiping, complaining, watching
television, reading novels, spending time with negative people.
3. Confess to God your negative
thinking as sin and turn from it.
Example: "I admit that I have been afraid
and anxious and have not trusted You to take care of me. I choose
to stop acting this way through Your power."
4. Ask God for a new
heart and mind and believe that you have it. 2 Corinthians
5:14; Galatians 2:20. These bad emotions are powerful, but faith
is more powerful and will always crowd them out. Fill your mind
with God's promises and there will be no room for the bad.
Example: Say aloud five times: "I have
love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, self-control through the Holy Spirit." Galatians
5:22
Say aloud "God is now filling my mind with courage,
with peace, with calm assurance."
"God is now protecting my family and me from
all harm. God will help me make the right decision. God will see
me through this situation."
5. Confront the emotions
and thoughts and get rid of them. Act on your belief that
God has given you victory. Reject the bad thoughts and emotions
as a lie from an evil spirit. Remember they can only give you one
bad thought at a time. But one thought leads to another, so you
must reject each one that comes and keep doing it until it stops.
2 Corinthians 10:5
Example: Say aloud five times "This emotion
is just a bad mental habit. I can change any habit with God's
help."
Say: "That worry is a lie from Satan.
I have peace and trust because my God is with me."
6. Saying something positive
about everything you have been speaking negatively.
Example: "Being alone is not bad or scary.
It is good, because it gives me time with God."
"I am confidant that God is making me a stronger
and better person through this trial."
Don't say "I will never be able to."
Say "With God's help I will do that."
7. Return to joy and
trust before you go to sleep. Psalm 63:6. You are affected
in your sleep and life by what you think right before you fall asleep.
Consciously surrender each negative thought into God's hands.
Picture these bad emotions and thoughts draining out of you like
black oil out of a car or dirty water out of a bucket.
Example: "I give you my worried thought
about ________. Thank you for taking care of it."
8. Make friends and
spend time with happy, hopeful people.
9. Seek to help other people who
have the same problem as you by sharing with them what God has done
for you!
10. Picture yourself in a partnership
with God with Jesus as your companion.
Example: Ask yourself: "If I could see
Jesus actually walking beside me would I be worried or afraid?"
Jesus has said "I am with you always" Matthew 28:20 so
say "He is with me now!"
